I recently read an article that discussed a great new trend in progressive companies. The CEOs of huge companies (EBay, Zappos, and even Microsoft, for example) are reducing the degrees of separation between themselves and all other employees by getting rid of unnecessary perks like assigned parking spaces and executive offices.
By having CEOs working in the same cubicles as everyone else, they become more approachable and employees start considering them to be part of the team instead of viewing them as distant bosses or detached executives. This not only makes the workers feel as valued as the higher-ups, but also encourages open communication, increases morale, and generates teamwork. This sort of change takes a free-thinking executive team willing to break free from the corporate molds of years past, but across the board, the results seem to be very positive and well worth while!
