As a company, as a manager, or even just as a human being, you desire respect. You want to be treated fairly and correctly by those around you in personal and in business relationships. But how does one earn this elusive respect? There is definitely a right way and a wrong way to go about it.
Often times, people will try to cut corners and demand respect and loyalty. Respect is something that can’t be demanded. It also can’t be assumed that being in a position of authority or a position of power over others will automatically equal respect. In fact, being in a position of power and not treating others with kindness, fairness and respect will often yield the opposite result. This is the wrong way to go about it.
So what is the right way?
Loyalty, respect, and trust are valuable things that must be earned.
The first step to building respect and trust is to treat others the way you want to be treated…didn’t our parents teach us this? Having integrity, being honest and fair with your colleagues, and listening actively and effectively during every interaction is so crucial in gaining respect from your peers.
The second key ingredient is to respect yourself. If you know yourself well enough to set up personal boundaries, maintain strong beliefs, and have the ability to follow through on your word, this will help you to build the self respect that will cause others to notice and follow suit. Always, always, always practice what you preach and lead by example.
Third, you need to be knowledgeable in your field. If you don’t have credibility, why should someone respect you just because of your job title?
There’s no way around these steps. But if you spend time setting up this foundation, you will see untold benefits that will last a lifetime.
